President Trump just took a massive step towards protecting the 2nd Amendment rights of all Americans.

His administration has removed the term "assault weapon" from key federal regulations and declared that semi-automatic firearms are civilian weapons, not military hardware. This is an important clarification.

The Clinton administration first imposed these regulations to stop American manufacturers from exporting semi-automatic rifles to other countries. They declared these guns to be "weapons of war," even though not a single country on earth has a standard issue semi-automatic rifle.

But it wasn't just about exports. By adding this "weapons of war" language to the Federal register, activist judges were able to cite it to uphold state-level gun bans. They reasoned that if the Federal government declared that AR-15s were weapons of war, then it was perfectly reasonable for states to do the same.

Obama took that one step forward by actually targeting gun designers who were trying to share their files. In one action, the Obama administration went after the 1st and 2nd Amendment.

Trump is rolling all of this back. In addition to striking the phrases "assault weapon," he has reversed the Obama policy. Semi-automatic firearms are now formally recognized as civilian firearms. The Federal government no longer considers them weapons of war.

Already, however, we are seeing some of your colleagues trying to rise up to stop this. Their plan is to use the Congressional Review Act to block Trump's pro-gun executive actions and restore the anti-gun Clinton and Obama regs.

They already have 24 Republicans in the House ready to sign on. They need just one more. And with John McCain absent, these forces need just two Senators to jump ship to pass their resolution. You need to stop this by any means necessary.

The American people, time and time again, have voted against gun bans. There is a reason that the Federal assault weapon ban sunsetted in 2004.

For far too long, these Clinton- and Obama-era anti-gun regulations have been used to keep the sunsetted assault weapon ban alive at the state level. Now, President Trump is striking these regulations from the books and defending the 2nd Amendment once again.
