It took a month after the House passed the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act before it was introduced in the Senate. This stalling is shameful. But now that it has been introduced, it must be passed as soon as possible.

The Supreme Court ruled in 1973 that the point of viability was around 28 weeks. However, the law has not caught up to modern, 21st Century science. At 20 weeks, the unborn start to feel pain in-utero. At 21 weeks, it has been proven that they can survive outside the womb.

The Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act would bridge that gap. It would recognize the humanity of the unborn and ensure that these children are not killed.

Look at it this way. If a doctor has to perform surgery on a fetus in-utero at 20 weeks, the doctor must administer anesthesia. Otherwise, the surgery would be unethical because the child would feel pain. But if that same surgeon wanted to perform an abortion, all those rules go out the window.

If doctors aren't allowed to perform surgery on the unborn without anesthesia, how can anyone possibly say it is ethical or legal to abort and dismember the child at the same stage of his or her development?

This legislation would save tens of thousands of lives every year. Those babies will be born, grow up, and have children of their own. The amount of lives you can save is exponential.

You have an opportunity to put a stop to late-term abortions once and for all.

Watching you and your colleagues withdraw the bill earlier this year was absolutely shameful. That's the only word that comes to mind to describe legislators too afraid to protect the rights of the unborn. Shameful.

But now, you have a chance to make it right. You must do everything in your power to get the Senate to pass the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.
