Major 2nd Amendment & Concealed Carry Victory, But Will It Matter?

Another Federal Judge just struck down a concealed carry ban, this time in the US Territory of the Northern Mariana Islands.

We have two choices. We can either wait for the liberal 9th Circuit Court to hear the appeal or we can take action right now and cement this ruling nationwide.

I choose the latter.

Right now, the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act has 216 co-sponsors. That is pretty much enough to pass the bill during a floor vote in the House. The Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee has co-sponsored the Senate version of the bill.

The votes are there to move this forward. They are out of excuses.

It is time to make concealed carry reciprocity the law of the land. I am writing you to ask that you please support S.498 and H.R.986 to make concealed carry legal nationwide, as the Constitution requires.

Just this past week, a Federal judge ruled that the US Territory of the Northern Mariana Islands could not constitutionally ban concealed carry.

Yet another judge has ruled that the right to bear arms means that Americans have a right to bear arms. But 25% of Americans still live in states that refuse to honor this right.

Ten years ago, Congress passed a reciprocity bill allowing retired police officers to carry their weapons nationwide. Different states had different rules for retired officers, so Congress stepped in to make reciprocity universal. There is absolutely no doubt that this has had a positive impact on reducing crime.

It is time to do the same for other law-abiding citizens.

No one is suggesting that we go back to the Wild West. All this bill does is treat concealed carry permits like drivers licenses and make sure that they are accepted nationwide.

If someone is allowed to carry a concealed weapon in their home state, then they should be allowed to do the same nationwide. After this bill becomes law, it will compel states to give permits to their own citizens as well. It would be hard for a state like New York to allow Texans to carry in the state but deny that right to New Yorkers.

The data shows that as concealed weapons permit numbers increase, violent crime decreases. Criminals don't ask for permission to carry guns. The only thing that our country's patchwork system of gun laws accomplishes is disarming law-abiding gun owners when they are traveling.

The Second Amendment reads that the "right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." The Supreme Court ruled in Heller v. D.C. that the Second Amendment provides an individual right and then the Court ruled a year later in McDonald v. Chicago that the Second Amendment must be respected by states and municipalities.

So why are you and your colleagues allowing states to disarm out-of-state travelers and arrest those who mistakenly carry their firearms while traveling through?

Better yet: why are you and your colleagues allowing Congressional leaders to mothball this legislation?

The Concealed Carry Act has 216 co-sponsors in the House. It takes 218 to pass a bill on the floor. Why hasn't this legislation received a vote?

A similar bill in the Senate, the Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, has waited a whole year for a hearing in the Judiciary Committee. The Chairman of that Committee, Chuck Grassley, is one of the co-sponsors.

The votes are there. Why you and your colleagues will not move this legislation forward is beyond me.

A right delayed is a right denied. You have the power to fix this country's patchwork system of gun laws right now. But you choose not to. That has to end!
