Yes, this Army Lieutenant Deserves to be Pardoned

The evidence of Army Lt. Clint Lorance's innocence is piling up. He was convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison for ordering his men to fire upon oncoming traffic. But the prosecutor deliberately left out the fact that the "victims" were later implicated in constructing roadside bombs. They were not innocent. They were Taliban bomb technicians.

Three years ago, Army 1st Lieutenant Clint Lorance was sentenced to 20 years in prison for instructing his men to open fire on a motorcycle barreling towards them. There were three fighting-age men on the motorcycle and they were ignoring the soldiers' orders to slow down and stop.

Two of the motorcyclists were killed. A third man fled on foot and escaped.

Military prosecutors went after Lt. Lorance because the victims were discovered to be unarmed. But later, their fingerprints revealed their connection to roadside bombs in the area. They weren't innocent. They were building roadside bombs.

This evidence was deliberately left out of the trial.

Additionally, because the third motorcyclist escaped on foot, there is no telling whether he was armed.

Officers in combat have just a split second to make life and death decisions to protect their men. The fact that Lt. Lorance was sentenced to almost two decades in prison for protecting his men is shameful.

The Lorance family petitioned the Obama White House for a pardon but their requests were ignored. Now, Congressman Duncan Hunter is taking up the cause and pressuring the Trump administration for clemency.

I am writing to ask that you take up this cause. Fight for this soldier.

Lt. Lorance was only in charge of his platoon for three days. He made a split-second decision to protect his men. That is not a crime, and certainly not a crime worthy of 20 years in Leavenworth.

Neither you nor I will ever be able to repay the men and women who put on the uniform to protect our freedoms. But helping bring justice to Lt. Lorance is a good start...
