Trump's VA Secretary Begs for Power to Fire Employees Who Mistreat Veterans

Another scandal has rocked the VA, with veterans, writhing in pain, being kicked out of wheelchairs and forced to lie down on the floor to get comfortable.

Trump's VA Secretary, David Shulkin, is begging Congress to give him the power to fire employees at the VA who mistreat veterans, break the law, or violate the public's trust. Right now, it can take a year to fire an employee caught abusing or neglecting a veteran.

The VA Accountability First Act of 2017 would change that. It would empower the VA Secretary to fire employees who are caught mistreating veterans.

Trump supports the bill. Sec. Shulkin supports the bill. It has bipartisan support in both chambers of Congress. Yet, it is sitting there collecting dust while veterans continue to suffer.

Two veterans walked into the Durham VA last week and begged to see doctors. One was experiencing crippling phantom pain in his amputated leg. He was doubled over in pain and the only time a VA employee came to see him was to scold him for sitting in a wheelchair he wasn't officially given.

The other Veteran was trembling, short of breath, and in pain. He asked for a place to lie down while he waited for the doctor. The staffers refused to accomodate him. The only time an employee came over to him was to kick him off the hospital floor. That's right, he was forced to lie on the hospital floor because they would not accomodate him.

Both were left writhing in pain for hours.

Here's the worst part. Even if VA Secretary Shulkin walked into the Durham VA and tried to fire these employees, he wouldn't be able to. He would have to give them 30-days notice and then allow them to appeal their firing, a process that takes an average of 281 days to complete.

Even when VA employees mistreat Veterans, they can't be fired.

The VA Accountability First Act of 2017 would change that. This legislation would slash the termination notice period from 30-days to 10-days. Additionally, instead of allowing appeals to drag on for an entire year, the bill would limit the appeals process to just 45 days for demotions and firings.

Similar legislation passed the House in the past, but was blocked by Democrats in the Senate.

Please, our Veterans need better care. They are literally suffering and, in some cases, dying because of neglect and mistreatment. Yet the law prevents these terrible employees from being fired.

As long as the law puts the needs of government employees ahead of the Veterans they're supposed to serve, we will continue to see tragic cases like this. We will continue to hear stories about Veterans committing suicide in the parking lot because they can't get in to see a doctor.

Our veterans will continue to be abused as long as the employees who are caught mistreating them are allowed to keep working there.

The VA Accountability First Act is common sense. It has bipartisan support in Congress, a President willing to sign it, and a VA Secretary willing to implement it.

All that is missing is YOU to force a vote on it.

I am begging you to pass this legislation. Give VA Secretary Shulkin the power to fire any employee who breaks the law, mistreats a veteran, or abuses the public's trust.

These veterans answered the call to protect you. It's time for you to do the same for them.
