Congress created the Prisoner of War Medal. Only Congress has the power to stop him from receiving it.

Bowe Bergdahl's sentence was a travesty and a disgrace, not just to the military justice system, but also to all the men (and one military dog) who were killed or wounded while searching for him.

These search parties heard over the radio that Bergdahl was seeking out the Taliban. They knew that they were searching for a traitor and a deserter. They went on the mission anyway because it wasn't up to them to dole out justice. It was their job to bring him home.

Six Americans and a military dog named Remco didn't make it home. Others were injured, such as National Guard Master Sergeant Mark Allen, who now suffers from a traumatic brain injury after being shot in the head while searching for Bergdahl.

I am relieved that the Trump administration is taking a look into this ridiculous sentence. But right now, there is something you can do to make sure the memory of the men killed in action is not tarnished any more.

Bergdahl's lawyers are now demanding that their client receive the Prisoner of War medal. While your predecessors debated whether it made sense to honor people who were captured, the medal now serves as a testament to the heroism of those forced to endure horrors at the hands of the enemy.

Bowe Bergdahl shouldn't qualify for this medal. He wrote his parents saying he was "ashamed to be an American." He deserted his post and sought out the Taliban. After being released, he even praised his Taliban captors for at least being honest with him, more honest than he felt the US military was.

This man deserves nothing.

I appreciate the fact that many in Congress are pressuring the Pentagon to revisit this sentence. But right now, there is something you can do that is entirely within your power: stop Bergdahl from receiving this commendation.

The men who died and were injured looking for him deserve better. The 30,000+ recipients of this award deserve more than being lumped in with a traitor.

The Prisoner of War medal was created by an Act of Congress in the 1980s. That means that you now have the power to, in rare and exigent circumstances, intervene to make sure the medal only goes to someone deserving.

I will say it again: Bowe Bergdahl deserves nothing. If you allow him to receive this commendation, I will have no choice but to assume that you think this deserter is a hero.
