There are less than three months left until the midterm elections. Instead of using this as an opportunity to reaffirm their commitment to the Constitution, many in Congress want to push a new radical gun control plan. They think that will help win them re-election.

Right now, they are demanding a vote before the midterms on a "red flag bill." The truth, however, is that this plan would shift the country in a radical direction and open millions of innocent Americans up to firearm confiscations.

Currently, there are only five ways that Americans can lose their right to keep and bear arms. They can be (1) convicted of a felony or certain violent misdemeanor, (2) involuntarily admitted to a mental institution, (3) adjudicated mentally defective, (4) a fugitive from justice, (5) dishonorably discharged from the military, or (6) a non-citizen or illegal alien.

Police already have plenty of tools to disarm dangerous individuals. If someone truly is a criminal, all it takes is charging them with a crime to take away their guns.

However, gun control advocates don't think that is good enough. To them, the right to keep and bear arms should be a privilege instead.

So, they are pushing a radical piece of legislation that would make it easier to disarm gun owners and the GOP is falling for it.

Except under their plan, police could confiscate someone's guns without even having to charge them with a crime.

An angry family member, neighbor, or even complete stranger would be able to turn a gun owner into police. Then, officers would have the right to confiscate the individual's guns without any charges being filed whatsoever. It would then be up to the gun owner to hire a lawyer and convince a judge that he or she deserves to get their guns back.

Forget about "innocent until proven guilty." This plan would flip that completely upside down.

Gun confiscation based on hearsay is flagrantly unconstitutional.

I don't care what the bill's intentions are. It will open the floodgates for innocent gun owners to be unconstitutionally deprived of their 2nd Amendment rights.

You don't solve issues of gun violence by disarming innocent, law abiding Americans. But that is exactly what is being proposed.

You need to kill this unconstitutional red flag bill and any other gun confiscation bill like it.

This is not a "compromise." This is just another attempt to chip away at the 2nd Amendment.
