There is a crisis at the southern border. It is not manufactured. It is not made-up. A hundred thousand illegal aliens are being apprehended every month. Almost all of them are taking advantage of our broken asylum system so that they can be released into the country.

Graham's bill will fix this by passing two major changes to our asylum laws.

The first will change the Flores Settlement to allow Border Patrol and ICE to detain illegal alien children and family units for up to 100 days (instead of the current limit of 20-days). The second change would require that asylum seekers fill out their applications in their home countries or the first safe country they arrive in.

Right now, fraudulent asylum applications have caused a massive backlog in our immigration courts. It is taking over 730 days for an asylum case to see a court room. But if an illegal alien shows up to the border with a child in-tow, Border Patrol and ICE are forced to release them after just 20 days. Arriving at the border with a child guarantees they are released, regardless of whether they have any legitimate asylum claims.

The backlog would disappear by requiring asylum seekers apply in their home countries. This would allow immigration agents to weed out the frauds abroad without having to first release them into the United States. And with a hundred days to process family unit arrivals, illegal aliens would no longer be able to use children as pawns or get-out-of-jail-free cards to force their way into the country.

These are common sense fixes that respect asylum applicants' rights, keeps families from being separated at the border, and cracks down on the rampant fraud that is causing this crisis.

I am demanding that you support and pass this legislation, as-is. Many of your colleagues want to tack on an amnesty provision to legalize millions of illegal aliens already in the country. You CANNOT, under any circumstances, allow this to happen.

You CANNOT allow your open border colleagues to hold our national security and public safety hostage in order to get their amnesty bill through.

You were elected to serve the American people, your constituents. You have a duty to make sure that our borders are secure and to stop this invasion. Legitimate asylum seekers deserve to be able to have their cases promptly heard without frauds causing this massive immigration court backlog.
