You cannot, under any circumstance, allow the Feinstein-Cicilline Assault Weapon Ban to pass.

There is nothing "common sense" about this legislation. This is nothing but an attempt to target tens of millions of law-abiding Americans and ban the guns they use for self-defense and sport.

When the original Assault Weapon Ban passed in 1994, the Clinton Justice Department concluded that it had no significant impact on crime in America. The Columbine school shooting happened after the ban went into effect.

Many of your colleagues are claiming that the assault weapon ban should be renewed. But the fact of the matter is that this latest version of the bill is the most radical gun ban ever introduced in Congress.

The original bill in 1994 banned 24 guns by name. The 2019 version of the bill would ban over 204 guns by name. These are guns that are lawfully owned by tens of millions of Americans.

But the bill doesn't stop there. It also targets other models of semi-automatic rifles and shotguns by banning any firearm that can be held in your hand. The 1994 bill targeted guns with prohibited features like "pistol grips," which had a precise definition in the law. But the 2019 bill defines a pistol grip as "a grip, a thumbhole stock or Thordsen-type grip or stock, or any other characteristic that can function as a grip." If you can hold it in your hand, it would be banned.

And it gets worse. The legislation would also ban millions of handguns too. It would go after pistols with threaded barrels and ban arm braces designed to help disabled shooters fire pistols one-handed. The Supreme Court has already ruled that Americans have a right to own handguns. This bill is flagrantly unconstitutional.

This bill, like its predecessor, would not stop violent crime. Evil people will always find a way to inflict harm on people. No, this bill is only meant to target innocent law-abiding Americans like me.

Enough is enough. Every time there is a mass shooting, the first impulse in Congress is to blame gun owners like me. Instead of targeting the actual criminals, this bill would only disarm law-abiding Americans and make it harder to defend ourselves and our families.
