Last month, a number of provisions within the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act expired. For the first time in years, government officials are no longer able to get secret surveillance warrants to spy on innocent Americans.

We have seen how these powers have been abused. It is well documented that FBI and DOJ officials abused their power and lied to the FISA Court in order to continue their surveillance of the Trump campaign. They literally fabricated documents to trick a judge into letting them spy on a Presidential candidate...

But the Inspector General now says that the misconduct was much worse. Horowitz's team randomly chose 29 other FISA warrants and found that in each case, laws were broken. Claims that FBI agents made to the FISA Court were not supported. They lied to the court so they could secretly spy on Americans...

The criminality is much more widespread than previously thought. FBI agents weren't just breaking the law and violating the Constitution so they could spy on Trump's campaign. They are doing this around the country to spy on other innocent Americans too.

This all leads me to one simple question: How could you possibly vote to reauthorize a law when you don't even fully understand all of the ways that it has been violated? How can you possibly hope to amend the law to prevent abuse when you don't yet know all of the loopholes that these traitors used?

Until U.S. Attorney John Durham releases a final report or unseals indictments against these perpetrators, there is no way to know whether the modest changes within the ridiculously-named USA Freedom Authorization Act could possibly prevent these crimes from happening again.
