All around this country, in every major city, police officers are putting their lives on the line to protect Americans' lives, homes, and businesses from the violent mobs trying to loot and burn down entire neighborhoods.

The equipment that police officers are using -- body armor, helmets, riot shields, and tear gas launchers -- are almost all hand-me-downs from the federal government under the 1033 Program. Police departments are able to purchase discounted surplus military and federal law enforcement equipment, saving cities and towns (and their taxpayers) millions of dollars in the process.

As you watch police departments protecting homes and businesses and pushing back violent rioters, they are almost all using Federal equipment that was acquired through this program.

Right as the riots are finally starting to be put down, Democrats want to pull the plug on this program and cut off Federal assistance to police departments. The Radical Left wants to protect the rioters and looters by stopping police departments from buying federal gear... and they have GOPers signing onto their plan!

The video of George Floyd being killed in the street was appalling. Any police officer who abuses their authority to victimize or kill innocent people deserve to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

But we are also witnessing, in real time, the selfless sacrifice of law enforcement officers who take their oath to "protect and serve" seriously. Multiple officers have been killed and hundreds have been injured over the last week fighting back against rioters and looters.

And yet, despite all of these dangers, these first responders continue to put their lives on the line every night to protect their neighbors and communities from these violent thugs.

In every major city, police have been able to put down these riots because they had access to the protective equipment and non-lethal weapons that they need to do their jobs.

For years, the 1033 Program, also known as the Federal Law Enforcement Support Program, has allowed local and state police departments to purchase surplus military and federal police equipment for pennies on the dollar. Yes, this program includes surplus rifles and pistols, but almost all of the gear transferred is characterized as defensive or non-lethal/less-than-lethal.

Over the past week, we have seen this equipment in use. Riot shields and helmets are almost always hand-me-downs from the Pentagon and Federal prison system. Tear gas canisters are also usually fired from surplus military grenade launchers. Even batons, body armor, and SWAT vehicles are commonly transferred from the Feds to local departments.

In just the past couple days, countless American lives, homes, and businesses have been saved by police officers using equipment procured through the 1033 Program.

And yet, instead of helping these departments, many of your colleagues want to pull the plug on it all together.

Senator Brian Schatz (D-HI) and Representative Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) have both introduced legislation end the 1033 Program and cut off Federal assistance to police departments around the country.

It is a despicable attempt to resurrect an Obama-era policy that did absolutely nothing to keep the American people safe.

If these bills pass police departments will be denied the equipment they need to keep their communities safe. You CANNOT allow this to happen.

You need to be supporting law enforcement right now and helping protect American communities, not protecting the rioters and looters.

Let this serve as a warning: any Congressman or Senator who votes to suspend or eliminate the 1033 Program will be removed from office. That is a promise!
