Every state has a different standard for getting a driver's license. Some states require more training, others set different permit ages, and different states have different traffic laws.

But someone who is licensed in Texas is still allowed to drive in New York. We as a country recognize that it would be a nightmare to expect people to get a driver's license for every state they visit.

If we are willing to have nationwide reciprocity for a privilege like driving, why do we have a patchwork system of reciprocity agreements for the right to bear arms?

The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act would apply the logic of driver's license reciprocity to concealed carry permits. If someone is allowed to defend themself with a concealed weapon in one state, they would be allowed to do so in every state.

In 2004, Congress passed the Law Enforcement Officers' Safety Act. This bill dictated that current and retired police officers have a right to carry in all 50 states. Some states challenged the law but it was upheld as Constitutional.

You have the Constitutional authority to pass nationwide concealed carry reciprocity.

The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution protects every American's right to keep and bear arms. The Supreme Court has ruled that "bear arms" means to "carry guns." Yet, in a minority of states, residents and visitors are prohibited from defending themselves in public. Even if someone is licensed to carry a gun in their home state, places like New York, New Jersey, and California refuse to let them carry a gun there.

This is one of the big civil rights issues of our time. For far too long, a minority of states have been allowed to completely ban concealed carry. For far too long, interstate travelers have been forced to decide whether to disarm when crossing state lines or carry illegally.

No one should have to make this decision. No state should be allowed to prohibit concealed carry.

I am writing to strongly urge you to force a vote and pass the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act to restore the Second Amendment to the way the Founders intended.
