In 1934, your predecessors passed the National Firearms Act. Among other things, this legislation added a $200 tax and lengthy background check process to all suppressor purchases. The goal of this legislation was to put suppressor ownership out of reach for the poor and middle class. In many ways, this legislation is one of the last standing pillars of the Jim Crow era.

When the law was originally passed, $200 had the same buying power as over $4,000 of today's money. Add in the fact that the National Firearms Act was passed at the height of the Great Depression and it is easy to see how it was deliberately designed to put suppressor ownership out of reach for most Americans. Congress never pegged the NFA tax to inflation, so it continues to cost $200 to this day. But even that is far too much to charge Americans looking to exercise their Constitutional right.

The Hearing Protection Act was introduced to undo this unjust gun control law. Instead of charging Americans $200 to purchase a suppressor and forcing them to wait up to a year for approval, the HPA would deregulate suppressors and allow them to be purchased through the same background check process used to purchase firearms. Instead of a background check costing $200, it would cost less than $10. Instead of waiting a year for approval, the background check would be performed in less than half an hour. And better yet, all suppressor taxes collected over the past 80+ years would be refunded and the registry of suppressor owners would be destroyed.

Even in European gun control states, suppressors are deregulated and treated as safety devices. The Hearing Protection Act would do the same in this country.

Yesterday, Congressman Jeff Duncan added the Hearing Protection Act as an amendment to the Sportsmens' Heritage and Recreational Enhancement (SHARE) Act, which will be heard tomorrow in the House Committee on Natural Resources, putting it on the fast-track to a floor vote.

I am writing to demand that you get behind this effort. This is an opportunity to roll-back a 80+ year-old gun control bill and onf of the last remaining Jim Crow laws still on the books. You MUST move forward and put this legislation on President Trump's desk!
