Lindsey Graham just announced that the Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a gun control hearing before the end of the month. Their goal is to push through Senate Bill 7, the Extreme Risk Protection Order and Violence Prevention Act.

Graham and the GOP leadership claim that this bill is a "compromise." By that, they mean radical leftists want to confiscate all guns, but the GOP is only going to let them confiscate some of them...

You must kill S. 7 or any other "red flag" bill that emerges in this committee hearing. The whole idea of Extreme Risk Protection Orders is a gross affront to the Bill of Rights and concept of Justice in this country.

Americans have an individual right to keep and bear arms for self-defense. They also have a right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty and a right to present a legal defense if they are accused of violating the law. S. 7, if implemented, would chip away at all of those fundamental rights.

First of all, it would turn gun ownership into a privilege instead of a right. If the government can suspend someone's gun rights and confiscate their firearms without even accusing them of committing a crime, then gun ownership ceases to be a right. Red Flag laws allow vengeful family members, friends, and neighbors to turn gun owners into police without having to provide any real evidence that they should have their guns confiscated. It's all just hearsay...

But even worse, these laws allow for ex parte hearings to be used when deciding the future of someone's gun rights. An ex parte hearing is one where the defendant -- the gun owner -- isn't even allowed to attend. Not only would gun owners be kept in the dark about these hearings, but they would also be barred from attending and speaking in their defense.

The worst aspect of Red Flag laws, however, is the fact that it completely shifts the burden of proof from prosecutors to the gun owner. Instead of a prosecutor having to prove someone's guilt, Extreme Risk Protection Orders require the gun owner to prove his or her innocence. That isn't America.

Police already have ample tools to ensure that dangerous and deranged individuals cannot own guns. Suspects can either be charged with a crime or involuntarily admitted into a mental facility. Both would trigger immediate disarmament. All law enforcement needs to do is enforce the laws already on the books. You do not need to give law enforcement these new powers...

You were sent to Washington to protect my rights, not to sign them away. The Founding Fathers made self-defense an individual right specifically to prevent people like you from legislating them away.

If you dare push Senate Bill 7 -- or any disarmament bill for that matter -- you will be removed from office, one way or another...
