This week, all eyes will be on Congress' negotiations over the next phase of coronavirus relief.

Republicans and Democrats are hoping that while everyone is focusing on that, no one will be paying attention to their other schemes.

Both parties have now agreed to make Juneteenth -- a holiday that no one had ever heard of -- a federal holiday. But in addition to that, they are also demanding that we abolish Columbus Day as well. The GOP thinks that this is a "compromise"...

This week, all eyes will be on the negotiations over the next round of coronavirus relief bill. But many of your colleagues are hoping that this will give them the cover they need to push through other bills.

One of those bills would create a new federal holiday called "Juneteenth."

Juneteenth is not a nationwide holiday and should not be added to the calendar. It commemorates the fact that the City of Galveston, Texas learned about the Emancipation Proclamation 1,001 days after Abraham Lincoln signed it. Juneteenth wasn't even made a Texas holiday until 1980. Prior to last month, few people had ever heard about this holiday. And yet now, you are now expected to vote to make it a federal holiday.

First of all, you need to understand how disruptive this would be. Memorial Day and Fourth of July are already federal and bank holidays. To insert another holiday in the middle would be incredibly disruptive. But beyond that, this just simply isn't a Federal holiday. A local, Texas holiday celebrating a city learning about the Emancipation Proclamation 3 years after it was signed is not reason to create a new federal holiday.

But amazingly, the proposal gets worse. Democrats are now advancing an amendment written by Ron Johnson and James Lankford to also abolish Columbus Day. As you know, the Far Left in this country have been trying to abolish Columbus Day for decades. Johnson and Lankford proposed giving it to them in order to "balance the budget."

I don't care what holidays people celebrate. If people want to celebrate the fact that Galveston learned that Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation three years after he actually did it, more power tothem. If people want to refuse to celebrate Columbus Day, I don't care.

The problem I have is that this has nothing to do with the holidays themselves and is simply a thinly veiled attempt to appease the anti-American mob trying to tear this country apart.

Federalizing a previously-unknown Texas holiday and removing Columbus Day from the calendar is not a "compromise." It is a surrender.

You cannot appease these people. What started as a debate over Stonewall Jackson's statue three years ago has now transformed into a radical movement to tear down statues of Abraham Lincoln and even to destroy Mount Rushmore. We are currently racing down the slippery slope...

If you dare try to appease the mob by adding Juneteenth to the calendar, removing Columbus Day, or both, you are finished.
