Congress is voting TODAY on a package that would allow the Federal government to block law abiding gun owners from purchasing firearms. The bills - H.R. 8 and H.R. 1446 - would allow the government to run out the clock on firearm background checks to prevent people from purchasing guns. This would apply to private AND gun store purchases.

The idiots in the Republican Party see this as a "compromise." They want to give the Federal Government the power to simply block lawful gun purchases...

You MUST kill H.R. 8 and H.R. 1446. These two bills cannot be allowed to become law.

Combined, these two bills would give the Federal government the power to block millions of lawful gun purchases simply by refusing to conduct the background checks.

Right now, the FBI has 72 hours to conduct a firearm background check. If after three days they have not come back with a Yes or No, the purchaser is allowed to take the gun home anyway. Some of your colleagues call this the "Charleston Loophole," but that is absurd. This is a compromise that was ironed out in the early 1990s to make sure that the Federal government couldn't simply block gun purchases by refusing to conduct the background checks.

Gun control advocates have spent years trying to rebrand this "compromise" as a loophole. They are lying.

H.R. 8 would force all gun purchases to include a background check, with few limited exceptions. This is bad enough because it would allow the Federal government to record every time a firearm changes hands in this country (using a database). But when combined with H.R. 1446, it is even more dangerous.

H.R. 1446 would give the Federal government 10 business days to process a background check and then an additional 10 business days to process an appeal. That means that the government would have the power to string gun purchasers along for 20 business days before actually having to give them a final Yes or No answer. Unfortunately, the Form 4473 required to initiate the background check is only valid for 30 calendar days after it is submitted.

That means that technically, the Federal government would be given the power to run out the clock on millions of gun purchases every single year. The background check forms would expire before the Federal government was required to complete the check itself... Even if a purchaser ultimately won his or her appeal, they would then be forced to start the whole process over again...

This is something that gun control advocates have always wanted: the power for the Federal government to block lawful gun sales.

You CANNOT give them that power! If you allow the Federal government to run out the clock on gun purchases, this power will be abused. You know it and I know it...

And yet, many of your colleagues are presenting this bill as a "bipartisan compromise."

This is not a compromise. It is just one step towards the radical gun control movement's goal of preventing law-abiding Americans from being able to defend themselves.

You swore an oath to uphold and defend the 2nd Amendment. It is time to honor that oath.
