[Sen./Rep.] [FIRST NAME] [LAST NAME]
Washington, DC
Dear [Sen./Rep.] [LAST NAME]:
I write to you today with a profound sense of frustration regarding the ongoing Maui wildfires crisis. The situation in Maui has persisted for three excruciating weeks, and it pains me to witness the lack of meaningful action and accountability from our government. The recent announcement of a second investigation into the Maui wildfires is a step in the right direction, but it is far from enough. The blame for these devastating fires has been shifted away from the Democrats' "climate crisis" narrative, and instead, evidence suggests a downed power line as the culprit. While this may identify the immediate cause, it raises countless unanswered questions that demand your attention. First and foremost, the Hawaii State Department of Education has shockingly reported that 2,025 students remain unaccounted for in the Lahaina public school system. Out of the initial 3,001 students across four schools, only 538 have managed to re-enroll elsewhere, with 438 opting for the State Distance Learning Program. This is an alarming and unacceptable situation that requires immediate intervention. Secondly, the enforced media blackouts surrounding the cleanup of ground zero are deeply troubling. Vast stretches of black fencing have been erected around the area, effectively preventing any form of documentation through photos or videos and obstructing the reporting on Maui ground zero and its cleanup. The lack of transparency raises serious concerns about the government's commitment to accountability. The third concern revolves around offers to purchase land in Lahaina. Many Maui residents who have already suffered tremendous losses now fear that opportunistic developers might seize the moment to acquire land in the aftermath of the fires. Lastly, I cannot express my disappointment enough in the fact that, as Maui grapples with the aftermath of this tragedy, President Biden and his administration have had the audacity to request an additional $24 billion in aid for Ukraine. This is simply incomprehensible and unacceptable. While over 2,000 children in Maui remain unaccounted for, media blackouts persist, and developers covertly attempt to seize land, our government is pledging billions to a proxy war. It defies all reason and common sense. I implore you, Members of Congress, to prioritize the pressing issues right here at home for once. Investigate Maui; help find the 2,000 unaccounted children and the 850 others who have disappeared. Do not allow these media blackouts to continue; the people have a fundamental right to know what transpires at ground zero. Do not permit developers to exploit Maui residents; support comprehensive investigations into those making these offers, whether individuals or corporations. This tragedy should not be an opportunity for profit. In addition, under no circumstances should you approve more billions to be sent overseas while Maui residents suffer, and our fellow Americans struggle to rebuild their lives. Failure to address these demands will only serve to reveal incompetence, corruption, a lack of care, and an inability to uphold your oath to the American people. The eyes of the American people are upon you, and we demand action. Represent us as you were elected to do, or we will ensure that you are held accountable for your inaction.
Sincerely,
[SIGNATURE]
