[Sen./Rep.] [FIRST NAME] [LAST NAME]
Washington, DC
Dear [Sen./Rep.] [LAST NAME]:
I write to you with an increasing sense of frustration and disbelief as the holiday season draws to a close. The continued incarceration of patriots, freedom fighters, and voices of truth and liberty is nothing short of an abomination, especially during a time meant for family and reflection. The disgraceful imprisonment of those associated with the January 6th protest on seemingly baseless charges is an affront to the very principles our nation was built upon. The fact that these individuals remain separated from their families only exacerbates the injustice they are facing. How can we, as a nation that purports to champion freedom, allow such blatant violations of civil liberties? Equally infuriating is the imminent High Court hearing on February 20 and 21, 2024, regarding the potential extradition of journalist Julian Assange to the United States. The charges against him, stemming from the antiquated Espionage Act of 1917, are nothing short of an assault on the pillars of free speech and investigative journalism. I am well aware that more than a dozen lawmakers, spearheaded by McGovern and Massie, have already appealed to President Biden to end the prosecution against Assange. Yet, the urgency of this matter cannot be overstated. I urge you, as representatives of the people, to unleash the full force of your authority and demand an immediate halt to Assange's extradition and the dropping of all charges against him. Recent efforts, such as the resolution introduced by Rep. Paul Gosar, acknowledging the protection of journalistic activities under the First Amendment, are commendable but fall short of the drastic action needed to rectify this egregious injustice. The potential consequences of Assange's extradition are dire, with the specter of a 175-year prison sentence looming overhead. This is not just an attack on one individual; it is an assault on the very fabric of our Constitution. How can we stand idly by as the rights of truth-tellers are stripped away, and their families left in anguish? In a Constitutional Republic, dissent and critical journalism are not only protected by LAW but essential for maintaining a healthy society. The continued imprisonment of individuals exercising their freedom of speech is an indictment of the principles we claim to uphold. I implore you to channel the collective outrage of the American people and take decisive action to halt Assange's extradition and ensure the swift dropping of all charges against him. The time for half-measures and bureaucratic foot-dragging has long passed. The American people demand justice, and as their representatives, you have a solemn duty to deliver it.
Sincerely,
[SIGNATURE]
